Supporting Communities Since 1899

The OSM Fund of Benevolence has been at the heart of our Order’s charitable work for more than a century. Founded at the close of the nineteenth century, the Fund was formally opened in December 1899 with a modest credit balance of seventeen guineas. From these humble beginnings, it has grown into a major source of support for Secret Monitor Petitioners and charitable causes across the British Isles.

A Tradition Rooted in Generosity

In the early years of the twentieth century, senior members of the Order introduced the appendant Order of the Scarlet Cord specifically to encourage and increase donations to the Benevolent Fund. This spirit of generosity continues today, with the Fund distributing tens of thousands of pounds annually to those in need.

Through its Match Funding Programme, the Fund supports both individual members and local charitable initiatives, helping Conclaves amplify their fundraising efforts and make a meaningful difference in their communities.

Match Funding Programme

The Match Funding Programme is one of the Fund’s most impactful initiatives. During the 2024–25 programme, the OSM Fund of Benevolence awarded £9,300 to Provinces throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and the Channel Islands.

The charities supported are wide‑ranging, but they share one important characteristic: each project focuses on providing capital items that directly help those in need.

From equipment for community organisations to essential resources for care providers, the Fund ensures that donations translate into practical, lasting benefit.

How Members Can Contribute

Members wishing to support the Benevolent Fund can do so easily. Information on how to donate is available from your Conclave Recorder, who can also advise on:

Whether you are raising funds within your Conclave or supporting a local charity, the Benevolent Fund is here to help your efforts go further.

Helping Those Who Need It Most

The OSM Benevolent Fund remains a testament to the compassion and commitment of the Brethren. From its origins in 1899 to its modern‑day nationwide support, the Fund continues to uphold the values of friendship, care, and benevolence that define the Order of the Secret Monitor.

If your Conclave is planning a charitable initiative or wishes to learn more about contributing, please speak with your Recorder and help us continue this proud tradition of giving.
